Week Eighteen: Bonfire Night and 3 Kingdoms of Glory

4.11.19

We were the 3 kingdoms of glory: Sun Moon and Stars....Our Halloween costume for the trunk or treat. Everyone thought I was the statue of liberty

Hey everyone! This week was pretty long. It consisted of lots of door knocking and finding...wahoo! Pontefract is very different than Sheffield. Because it is a village, we see a lot of the same people around. I've also noticed that there seems to be a lot of closed-minded people because they've lived in Pontefract their whole life, and aren't open to the idea of there being a God. But we will keep searching for those who are prepared!

Halloween district finding! Went around with candy and pass along cards
On Tuesday we went to visit Jean and Cliff (the cute old couple.) Cliff expressed how Jean has been feeling happier since she started reading the Book of Mormon. This was a huge step because she's been down for years because of her illness. There is so much power in the Book of Mormon! At the end of the visit Cliff gave us Haribo sweets. They are the cutest! And speaking of Haribo...the factory is here in Pontefract and every time we walk to church it smells so strongly of gummy bears. Pretty funny.
The Haribo gummy factory is right by the meeting house. The air smelt like gummies when we walked to church

For the ward trunk-or-treat our trio went as the "Three Kingdoms of Glory." It was awesome! The trunk or treat here in England was about 10x smaller than ours in Utah, but it was still a fun night.

Halloween Cookies with some members

Halloween Game a member made us with an advent calendar. She filled each chocolate with something good or bad (mustard, carmel, etc.) So funny

On Friday I held a ballet class for the Pontefract Primary. It was such a wonderful turn out...we even had 3 nonmembers come! I had to get really creative with props. I got foam dots from Poundland and cut up a bedsheets for the girls to use as scarves for free dancing. One thing that I've learned about missionary work is that there are SO many ways to do it. You do not need to spend 18 months knocking on doors to fit the "typical missionary" standards. We can use our talents to future the work and to be authentic! If we can bring people into our church community in a more casual approach, it may spark interest on their end.

On Saturday we celebrated Bonfire night. Every November 5th bonfires and fireworks are lit in memory of the Gunpowder Plot. The plot was lead by a man named Guy Fawkes to blow up parliament, but he was caught and tortured. So they celebrate by lighting fires and exploding things. Super interesting.
We went to a members for a ward party and had a firework show. It was awesome!!
Hull For zone conference
I had a neat experience the other night as I was praying. I was asking the Lord a question and this scripture came to mind.
D&C 19:23- "Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my Spirit, and you shall have peace in me." It was a scripture I memorized 5 years ago, and was exactly what I needed. My invitation to you this week is to take one of your favorite scriptures and memorize it. I promise that it will come back in a future day when you need it. I love the scriptures!

Hope all is well is the USA. Cheers!

YORK
Ps: we discovered a very simple yummy recipe this week. Stick BBQ sauce and chicken in the crock pot all day. Shred the chicken, then add chopped cashews. Cut up sweet potatoes fries and combine with olive oil, garlic and rosemary, then stick in the oven. Ta da!
